Hello

I have been trying to look for a radio which will allow me to be able to scan as many channels as possible worldwide and also be able to transmit messages.

My understanding is that (and I may be wrong) I should be looking for radios having FM/LW/MW/SW bands to get maximum coverage? I came across this radio on Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0D3V3H356?smid=A3MAPYTSK71XNO&psc=1

Regarding transmitter, I've not looked much into it. I understand the licensing part as well but I'm guessing in a post apocalyptic scenario that would not matter.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Tony

Hi, that radio you are considering will receive a multitude of frequencies but what do you wish to achieve.
If you can answer that we can better help, also who do you want to transmit to?

Will you use a portable TX with just it's built in antenna or are you thinking of a seperate antenna.
Also I assume it will all have to be battery operated, as most likely there will be no mains power.

The bottom line is that receive is easy but transmitting is a different game altogether.

For radio receiver, the objective is to be able to receive as many stations as possible.

As for radio transmitter, it would be to transmit messages about my location or to pass information hoping someone will pick it up. It would be nice for it to have an option of having seperate antenna for better & longer range transmission but basically it ought to be inbuilt so that atleast it can transmit at closer distance.

The above may not necessarily be battery only operated and infact I'd prefer something which runs on both AC & DC power.

Hello Techminator

As to a radio for receiving as many stations as possible , you are right in choosing one with FM/LW/MW/SW .
You could also get one that can get air traffic as well , maybe some interest to you. There are so many radios out their it can be a mind field. Could I point you to have a look at a XHDATA D-808  which has SSB for upper side band and lower side band as well. Some come with and extra wire antenna to clip on the telescopic whip.
Keep looking you will find one that will suit you.
As for transmitting is another kettle of fish. One option which is licence free is PMR . Which you might already know. You can see how far we can get with the Logs in the forum on this site.

Hope this has helped a little. Keep us posted on your findings and anything else we can help with.

As John mentioned PMR is a great choice for local comms, anything from a couple of miles to 200 miles but that is when conditions are good and you are on high ground. I can talk to people about 18 miles away from my garden with a cheap handheld Baofeng & Quansheng radio £20 - £50.
There are a number of PMR Networks around the country & if you joined one it will give you some ideas of how far they reach. You haven't indicated where you are & approx height above sea level, if you want to do that we can aim you in the right direction.

Cheers,
Tony

I'm in Aberdeen but don't intend to live here indefinately as I intend to move to a place which is warm all year round such that I could easily live in the open without freezing. Australia seems like a good option as it is also well developed.

Tony

I'm sorry but I can't really help with Aussie radio, as I think they use a different band for PMR.
I can't help with Scottish Nets, if you were south east of England there is a Preppers Net & FB Group Click Here
